How many acres of woodland do you own or annually manage?
17
Please describe, with two or three sentences, why you are interested in woodlot ecology and management. Your answer helps us ensure that only those people truly interested in woodlots are added as members.
Recently acquired a farm property with 38 tillable acres and 17 acres of woodlot in eastern Columbia County. No experience in farming. While I will be transitioning the tillable acreage from conventional soybean/corn and no cover cropping, to biological farming methods by leasing land to an experienced regenerative grain farmer, I am also interested in learning more about how I can be a proper ecological steward of my woodlots. Interested in possibly growing mushrooms on the woodlot, in learning more about managing the health of the trees, silvopasturing, and also the possibilities of looking at how I can explore with a couple of my tillable acres implementing agroforestry practices like alley cropping etc. I am also director of a storytelling project called Hudson River Flows https://www.hudsonriverflows.com/, documenting with my colleagues the emergence of the Regenerative Food System in the Greater Hudson Valley.

Question: In Peter Smallidge's most recent "Ask a Professional" column for NYFOA's Forest Owner magazine he stated that some log buyers will reject ash that shows outward signs of "blonding" on the bark. Is this because the wood will change…Continue
