Event Description

The Foundation for Sustainable Forests fourth annual Loving the Land Through Working Forests conference featuring multiple in-the-field programs will be held in western New York this year.

The conference open with a speakers' program at 7 p.m. Friday, May 15 at Chautauqua Institution. In-the-field sessions are all-day Saturday, May 16 at a woodlot southeast of Sherman, NY. The in-the-field sessions are:

Keynote Session -- New thoughts in forest management: Worst First and treading lightly, a detailed explanation and on-the-ground examination of the Foundation’s recommended forestry approach. (2 ½ hours).

]Legacy and Estate Planning for the Woodland Owner: An introduction/outline of  estate planning & the need for woodland owners to plan for the future of land,  various ways to do that and conservation options available to them. (1 hour 10 minutes)

Horse Logging: Demonstration and discussion of the use of horses for logging to the benefit of the land and the economic factors. (1 hour 10 minutes)

Forests for Wildlife/Forests for Us: Managing woodlots and forests for wildlife and what our forests offer. (1 hour 10 minutes)

Sessions run concurrently and are repeated in the afternoon, although flexibility is built in to the schedule to meet the needs and desires of participants. Lunch is provided. To make it easier for families, children’s programming is made available throughout the day.

There is a nominal registration fee of $10 per person for the in-the-field sessions and pre-registration is required. Children under 14 are free, but need to be registered. The Friday evening speaker’s program is free and open to the public.
