What (if anything) is known about symbiosis of forbs with trees in broken canopy woodland?
1. Symbiosis: I was reading about the symbiosis of mycorrhizae with their arborial neighbors and wondered if forbs that might grow beneath the trees might also be advantageous or disadvantageous for the trees they live closely with.
2. Advantages from Forb to tree: Might some vegetation impart an advantage for the tree that is not symbiotic? I was thinking of things like perhaps providing nitrogen, providing protection from dessication, but could some forbs also provide other nutrients or protection from disease or pests?.
