More about me

Neal W. Chapman knows firsthand what it’s like to buy land and then try to figure out how best to manage it, balancing his and his family’s ideas and goals with sound land management principles.
As one of original nine Woodland Advocates in Wisconsin, he has “the motivation to do what we all should be doing – cultivating other people to think about their land besides as a place they go to hunt, fish or other common uses for their land. It’s a mentoring role that I thrive on,” Chapman said. “It’s a real bonus to be able to walk other people’s woods with them. There’s a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment.” Like his ancestor, Johnny Appleseed, Neal enjoys “planting seeds” of ideas with others, and watching some of them germinate into action.
Neal has acquired a substantial “tool kit” through his participation in many ongoing educational activities in Wisconsin, including the Master Woodland Steward Program, the Coverts (wildlife) Program, the Woodland Advocate Program, and the Wisconsin Woodland Leadership Institute, plus participating in workshops and field days sponsored by the Leopold Foundation, Tree Farm Committee, and Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association, Minnesota Forestry Association, and other courses offered by both Minnesota and Wisconsin Forestry Extension Services.
Neal can also be found working behind the scenes advocating for small landowners on issues they face, offering fresh ideas and concepts to decision makers, and designing and offering workshops on timely topics for landowners, adding yet other dimension to the term advocate.
Neal is also offering landowner classes on woodland stewardship through community education programs in Minnesota and Wisconsin

The hemlocks in my woodlots have been infested with hemlock wooley adelgid (HWA) for at least three years now.  Lately I've noticed some of them having a rust colored bark and I wonder if this is normal and that I just didn't notice it previously? …Continue
