I have some property where the best timber was harvested several years before I purchased it. There are now many areas where the buckthorn is so thick that nothing will grow under it. I am looking for suggestions on how to get these areas back…Continue

The hemlocks in my woodlots have been infested with hemlock wooley adelgid (HWA) for at least three years now. Lately I've noticed some of them having a rust colored bark and I wonder if this is normal and that I just didn't notice it previously? …Continue

Hi Bruce:
Thanks for your interest in the ning site. Your question is better as a question in the "questions and resources" tab than as a blog entry. I've copied it below. Would you mind reposting this as a question here http://cornellforestconnect.ning.com/forum/categories/maple-syrup-production/listForCategory
In the fall of 2011 we moved our entire (hobby) maple syrup production from property in Cattaraugus County to our son in law's in Ontario County. We have sold off 18 of the 33 acres in Cattaraugus - main sugar bush of 13 + acres is currently on the market. Our son in law set up the arch and sap lines on his mom's property and tapped their and his adjoining aunt's property. Since that time, as is human nature, what our son in law envisioned got blatantly derailed thru entirely no fault of his own by any means. Due to that we are looking to find information for him as well as us, in how to go about 'renting' taps ....that is what is the going price 'per tap', is there a rental agreement form in existence that should be signed or do we just write one up, etc......Obviously want all of our ducks in a row for the coming maple season so that we don't have the catastrophe we had last spring. This young man has poured so much of his heart and soul into this project, it is heart warming to us!!
Good luck with finding taps, I hope some show up.
Sincerely,
Peter
