Pete,

 A friend in Vermont and  were discussing control of beech sprouts. Here is his response: " Lewis: You mention Roundup on the stumps. Back in the sixties I was a much younger buck creating grouse habitat for one of the original founders of the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. At that time, foresters were recommending Borateam (borax) spread across the stumps of freshly cut, diseased trees, regardless of the species.

RE: deer not eating the beech when they coppice, I never noticed/knew so it must be the moose around here as something takes them back down."

Are there any formulations of Borax that are approved and effective?

I don't think moose would do well in the Southern Tier. Any information on how elk browse beech in Pennsylvania?
