I have been cutting and stump-treating witch hazel for the past two years. I purchased a dauber from https://landscape-restoration.com/product/buckthorn-blaster/ - I used glyphosate with the marker dye that comes with the dauber. In my situation, the with hazel was impeding sugar maple and shagbark hickory regeneration.

No, I never use herbicide. Brush sawing is very fast and it is easy to come through after several years and knock back the striped maple again so that the desired saplings lock in their dominance.

Did you apply any herbicide to prevent resprouting? If so what brand?

Over the past 40 years I have released many acres of red oak, sugar maple, and white ash seedlings and saplings from overtopping striped maple by simply going through a zipping them off close to the ground with a good sharp, motorized brush saw. This gives the seedlings and saplings a chance to get ahead of the striped maple. I now have beautiful, straight red oak 10-14 inches in diameter from the earliest releases.
