SUMMARY:Timber Harvesting and Water Quality Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday, September 19th, Cornell Cooperative Extension
of Onondaga County will offer a Timber Harvesting and Water Quality
Workshop at Cedarvale Maple Syrup Company, 3796 Pleasant Valley Road,
Town of Onondaga. Participants are encouraged to arrive by 8:30am and
the workshop will begin promptly at 9:00am.\nThe workshop will feature
a woods walk through a recently harvested property. The landowner, co
nsulting forester and Extension staff will discuss the harvest, includ
ing using a consulting forester and implementing water quality conserv
ation practices during a timber harvest. Some of the terrain may be di
fficult, so participants should plan accordingly, wear appropriate foo
twear and be prepared for inclement weather.\nResponsible land managem
ent practices are an important part of maintaining the pristine water
quality in the Skaneateles Lake and surrounding watersheds. There are
many state and federal regulations in place to conserve water quality
at the site of a timber harvest, including stream crossing permits and
protection of the Clean Water Act. Landings, temporary roads and stre
am crossings must be constructed at all harvesting sites, but must als
o be constructed to protect riparian zones, wetlands and vernal pools.
In the Skaneateles Lake Watershed, there are additional requirements
to protect the water quality and maintain the City of Syracuse’s wat
er supply filtration waiver. More information is available in the Prot
ection of Waters Program from the NYS DEC, and by visiting our website
at extendonondaga.org/watershed.\nThe event is free, but registration
is requested. Please contact Roy Widrig at (315) 424-9485 ext. 232 or
rlw294@cornell.edu to register.\n\nFor more information visit https
