SUMMARY:Managing White Pine in the Adirondacks
DESCRIPTION:                          \n\n   In this 
 workshop, participants will explore options for managing planted or na
 tural white pine stands based on resent research by natural resource s
 cientists.  Currently, there is very little proactive management of t
 he white pine resource in New York. The standard practice has been to 
 allow white pine stands growing on quality sites to revert to hardwood
 s. Silvicultural investments to re-establish white pine on better site
 s, characterized by nutrient-rich mesic soils, where the species can a
 ttain impressive yields and quality, are rare due to perceived costs a
 ssociated with controlling competing hardwoods, woody shrubs and herba
 ceous plants. Legitimate concerns about white pine weevil and white pi
 ne blister rust further exacerbate a reluctance to invest in managemen
 t. We will investigate those circumstances where such investments may 
 be warranted for commodity markets, landscape diversity, and wildlife 
 habitat with presentations, discussions and site visits.\n   \n\n\n
