 gnificant amounts of biomass.  Introducing biochar production in lieu
  of burning slash piles can offer both economic and environmental bene
 fits.  Three researchers from the U.S. Forestry Service, Dr. Deb Page
 -Dumroese, Dr. Nate Anderson and Dr. Ted Bilek will discuss why forest
 ry operations should consider on-site biochar production.  A brief re
 view of results from using biochar on forest, range and mine site tria
 ls conducted by the U.S. Forestry Service will be included. \nKey sup
 ply chain and economic aspects of biochar production based on recent f
 ield studies and examination of biochar as both a co-product and prima
 ry product will be presented. The discussion will include production s
 cenarios for a range of scales from small (25 kg per hour) to large en
 terprises (2500 kg per hour) using woody biomass as feedstock.  \nOn-
 site biochar production can help improve the economics of biomass from
  felling and reduce transportation needs.  The economics of a small-s
 cale near-forest biochar system will be discussed, along with minimum
