SUMMARY:Deer Browsing & Timber Growing Contest
DESCRIPTION:This field program will give landowners an opportunity to
learn how they can get involved in two hands-on projects that will hel
p them understand and improve the conditions in their woodlands. Peter
Smallidge, Cornell University State Extension Forester, will lead the
program which features both the AVID deer vegetation impact project a
nd the Northeast Timber Growing Contest.\nTo help document deer damage
to tree seedlings and understory plants like wildflowers and help gui
de deer management decisions, the Cornell University Department of Nat
ural Resources developed the AVID method (Assessing Vegetation Impact
from Deer). This citizen science project gives landowners and opportun
ity to measure and report the impact deer are having on tree seedlings
and wildflowers in their woodlands. \nThe Northeast Timber Growing C
ontest is designed the help landowners owners improve their woodlots w
hile having fun at the same time. Participating in the contest will he
lp answer questions like are my woods too thick or too thin?  How do
I select cull and timber trees?  How fast are my trees growing?  We
will learn about the various categories of the contest and will lay ou
t a plot, identify, measure and tag trees. \nWe’ll be serving burge
rs after the program so you don’t go home on an empty stomach.  The
re is no fee for this event, but please contact Kevin at kjm8@cornell.
