SUMMARY:April Learn at Lunch Webinar - Investigating Maple Dieback and
Decline in Michigan and Evolving Paradigms of Aspen Ecology and Manag
 ement
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming Learn at Lunch LIVE Webinar: \nDate: April 19, 2
016\nTime: 12 pm – 1 pm MT\n\nThis webinar is good for 1 CEU from th
e following organizations:\n-          Society of American Fo
 resters\n-          International Society of Arboriculture\n\
nHow to enter the webinar: 1. Click on the web link to enter the webi
nar: https://extension.zoom.us/j/789997459 2. You will be prompted to
enter your email and name to join the webinar. 3. You should be taken
to the presentation screen and have access to the audio. You are enco
uraged to participate and ask questions using the chat pod.\n\nPart 1:
Investigating Maple Dieback and Decline in Michigan\nSpeaker: Tara Ba
l, Research Assistant Professor and Master of Forestry Degree Program
Director, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Michig
an Technological University\nIn recent years, severe sugar maple crown
dieback had been noted across the Upper Great Lakes Region, with the
assumption being that it was caused by poor management or a series of
climate related stress factors.  In her research, Dr. Bal has shown t
hat the poor health conditions in some areas are likely a combination
decline factors, some of which were fairly unexpected!  Findings like
this push managers to “think outside the box” when it comes to tr
aditional silvicultural prescriptions for maple.\nTara L. Bal, PhD, CF
, is a Research Assistant Professor in the School of Forest Resources
and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University.  Her
research focuses on forest health and its biotic and abiotic influenci
ng factors and aims to provide scientific foundation for education, ma
nagement policies, and understanding the ecological response to change
s in forest health conditions. _______________________________________
 _____________________________________\nPart 2: Evolving Paradigms of A
spen Ecology and Management\nSpeaker: Kevin Krasnow, Research Faculty,
Teton Science School\nIn recent years, fundamental assumptions concer
ning aspen clonal age, regeneration, and genetic diversity have been c
hallenged, and these findings have important implications for manageme
nt and persistence of aspen in USA western forests.  In his presentat
ion, Dr. Krasnow will discuss evolving paradigms of aspen ecology and
the associated challenges and opportunities for this species in the co
ming century, with a focus on his research on the impacts of fire seve
rity and stand condition on aspen regeneration.\nKevin Krasnow Ph.D.,
research and graduate faculty with the Teton Science Schools, is a dis
turbance ecologist interested in understanding how and why ecosystems
change and identifying opportunities for increasing ecosystem resilien
ce. His research focuses on fire history, aspen ecology and restoratio
n, forest and fire management, and effective science education.\n\nWan
