Event Description

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County will host a workshop on May 5th to help farmers and farm land owners learn about farmland protection. “Farmland Protection: Let’s Get Started!” invites agriculture producers in Onondaga County to think about how protecting their working farmland could be a component of long term succession planning.

The workshop will cover the basics of land conservation as well as a review of the Onondaga County Ag Farmland Protection Board’s pre-application for the New York State Agriculture and Markets Farmland Protection Implementation Grant Program (FPIG)

The workshop will review the Onondaga County Farmland Protection Board’s purchase of development rights pre-application, which is designed to screen farms that are interested in applying for the New York State Agriculture and Markets FPIG. Although it is not known whether the State will solicit applications to FPIG this year, producers may be prepared for the next round by preparing the county pre-application. All counties in New York State are allowed to submit four project applications to FPIG when the State is accepting new applications. Onondaga County chooses its four applicants from the pool of pre-applications.

The event is on May 5 at the New York State Fairgrounds in the Wegman’s Demonstration Kitchen, Arts and Home Building. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre- registration is required for a lunch count. The cost is $15 per person and $25 per family, payable at the door.
