"Teach About Nature Where Nature Is"
The First Marked Nature Trail in the Nation was in Tuxedo
Between 1925 and 1928 the American Museum of Natural History and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission operated a "museum camp" at the western entrance to Harriman State Park on what is now the intersection of Routes 17 and 17A. Dr. Frank Lutz, the curator of entomology at the museum, and director of this station, believed that wildlife should be studied where it lived and so established the first marked nature trail in the nation at the site. The philosophy behind the construction of the trail and its labels was, "A friend somewhat versed in natural history is taking a walk with you and calling your attention to interesting things".
On Thursday, March 27th at 6:30pm the Tuxedo Historical Society (THS), 7 Hospital Road, Tuxedo, N.Y. 10987, will host a program about the trail presented by Sue Scher, LCSW. Twelve years ago Ms. Scher, a resident of the hamlet of Tuxedo, had the opportunity to get to know Harriman State Park and its group camps. A former camper, counselor and camp administrator she was able to recognize how important these camps have been and remain so for children from New York and New Jersey. As a former social worker and social work educator she found in these camps interesting social welfare history. Now, as professor emeritus she is able to continue researching the one hundred year history of the Harriman camps. The March 27th program is about one of these camps sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History and will be enhanced by many historic images.
The program is free and open to the public. Donations gratefully accepted. Seating is limited. For further information please contact THS at (845)351-2926 or tuxedohistory@gmail.com
