Striped maple control

Looking for way to control large volume of striped maple and witch hazel. Both are interfering with growth of oak seedlings. Cut/treat stump? Hack and squirt? if so what chemical for either of these? Best time of year to treat?

Best time of year to treat? Did similar project couple years back with Beech and Hop hornbeam with glyphosate and that worked very well on those trees but didn't seem as effective on occasional striped maple on that parcel. Your thoughts and experience appreciated.

Over the past 40 years I have released many acres of red oak, sugar maple, and white ash seedlings and saplings from overtopping striped maple by simply going through a zipping them off close to the ground with a good sharp, motorized brush saw.  This gives the seedlings and saplings a chance to get ahead of the striped maple.  I now have beautiful, straight red oak 10-14 inches in diameter from the earliest releases.

Did you apply any herbicide to prevent resprouting? If so what brand?

No, I never use herbicide.  Brush sawing is very fast and it is easy to come through after several years and knock back the striped maple again so that the desired saplings lock in their dominance.
