We have used slash understorey to deny entry & passage of deer to protect natural hardwoods regeneration, on progressive 10-ac stands subjected to manual heavy thinning of pine component only. The results are mixed, though it's unclear exactly why under lack of duff disturbance/ soil exposure, rodent predation, or succession of poor mast years. </p>
